Looking to enhance their then under-construction vacation home in the Makena Resort development, a California couple approached Tantalus Studio with a challenge: make the space feel layered, rich and contemporary without being able to change the in progress finishes specified by the development (which were overtly neutral and more transitional). Tantalus Studio curated a collection of decorative lighting, furnishings and artwork to introduce a palette of deep blue, aqua, and burgundy to liven up the warm, neutral tones. Textural fiber wall coverings in the entry and subtle graphic wallpaper in the dining area served to shift the mood and create depth in the open spaces. Walnut and oak-toned furnishings invite warmth, while black and charcoal elements were added for a contemporary edge. The resulting space pays homage to the inviting energy of the island without ever feeling contrived, making this the perfect understated, stylish escape.
