This island pied-à-terre, in the newly completed luxury highrise of Victoria Place in Honolulu, was an inspired collaboration between Tantalus Studio and the clients, a couple from Los Angeles. The prompt was clear and intriguing — the clients wanted their compact but elegant apartment to be reimagined as a “jewel box,” with beautiful, layered moments and one-of-a-kind items threaded throughout the home’s scheme. To kick off the design process, Ginger introduced the clients to some of her favorite Los Angeles showrooms, where they became more inspired with every visit and worked with Ginger to select the elements that would end up setting the tone for the aesthetic. Because art would serve as a major touchpoint in the home, the clients worked closely with Ginger to find pieces, both locally and from around the globe, that inspired them and brought energy and color to the space.

THE JEWEL BOX

Artworks and handcrafted furnishings were commissioned by favorite artisans to fit the design perfectly and give the space a custom, creative feel. Rich walnut wood and lighter oak tones, paired with a fresh, neutral wall palette, provided the perfect backdrop to offset the chosen design objects that made this jewel box come alive with color, texture, and story.

The warm, neutral living and dining spaces are punctuated by a dramatic painting of a cresting wave, in saturated turquoise and lavender tones, by local artist Peter Shepard Cole.

A bronze pendant fixture over the dining table anchors the space and creates a moody glow in the evenings.

The palette of the primary bedroom is rich and layered, with a lustrous rust-toned rug and a wood veneer wallcovering on the headboard wall. The custom porcelain and brass chandelier by Lindsey Adelman hugs the ceiling and completes the composition.
